Welcome to my
SIGHT READING PRACTICE PAGE
All students find it hard to sight read, not just guitarists,
so do not be put off by the technicalities of the instrument,
but try to develop these skills, starting with this page.
REMEMBER
Good performers = often mean bad sight readers
Good sight readers = often mean sloppy performers
So if you find sight reading hard, just learn to polish your pieces ;-))
GROOVY KIND OF SONG
What to look out for :-
The key signature (C major no sharps or flats. )
The time signature (4 crotchet beats / bar.)
How many open string notes on each stave and what are the strings called?
1st stave (bars 1-4) = 8 open strings
2nd stave (bars 5-8) = 2 open strings
3rd stave (bars 9-12) = 4 open strings
4th stave (bars 13-16)= 7 open strings
The quickest note (crotchet) The longest note (semibreve = bar 8 etc.)
The highest note (minim A = bar 10, 5th fret of 1st string)
The lowest note (crotchet A in bar's 4 & 21, 2nd fret of 3rd string.)
Have you noticed that all the notes are on the top three strings? (Of course you have ;¬))
MAKE HASTE SLOWLY
Treat each crotchet beat as a second (mm=1/60) and never rush the long notes.
Semibreve at bar 8 etc., as they can fade away before the 4 beats have finished.
Clap the rhythm of the first line, remember that the minims are 2 beats. Then, play that line.
Clap and play each further line separately, then play the whole piece.
Only now listen to the melody by clicking the PLAY option. Click TAB if you need some more help.
Eventually you will be able to play a new melody in one sitting, without clapping the rhythm first, but not yet.
My pupils can follow up this page by playing my Chapter Three.
