INTRODUCTION TO THE LESSONS

Who are these lessons directed to? Absolute beginners of any age who do not know a thing about music but need to "kick themselves" to get started on this musical adventure. So let's get started with ….

How to read music

Music consists mainly of PITCH and DURATION (value).

PITCH  = low or high or any note in between. There are 7 main notes in music and they are named after the first seven letters of the alphabet. These 7 notes are repeated at different pitches as can be seen and heard on any keyboard. They are either written on the line or in the space of a STAVE. Notes can also be placed above or below the stave.

To show where the notes are on the stave a CLEF (key) sign is written at the beginning of each stave. This sign can be called TREBLE CLEF (high key) or G CLEF. The latter definition can be used because the sign represents a medieval G and is created by circling around the second line of the treble stave. Any note on that line is called a G. For the purpose of these introduction lessons we are only using the following notes. G A B C D E F G

DURATION (value) =  The note has a length of sound measured in BEATS or parts of a beat. For the purpose of these lessons each beat is a second. The three note values used in these lessons are listed below.

This is called a CROTCHET and is worth one beat.
(Please note, that tails can go up or down.)

This is called a MINIM and is worth two crotchet beats.
(Please note, that tails can go up or down.)

This is called a SEMIBREVE and is worth four crotchet beats.
