When To Change The strings
Strings should be changed whenever they become dull or (with the bass strings) frayed. Never wait until the string breaks. Bass strings become dull quicker than the treble, therefore it is advisable to buy two sets of bass strings to one set of treble. If that is not financially viable, make sure you buy an extra D string.
Old strings do not remain in tune therefore you should never play on them, especially if you are taking a grade or playing in a School
Concert. Depending on how well you can tune your guitar (strings take time to settle) you should contemplate changing your strings a month before the event.
Fig I. shows the HEAD of the guitar with each string in their correct dowel.

New strings always take some time to remain in tune, therefore it is advisable to change the bass or treble strings in separate sessions.
Replace one string at a time, starting with the fifth (A) string.

Never take all the strings off at once.
This sudden relaxing of the tension may damage the BRIDGE.

Changing The Bass Strings
On the bass strings, you will find a hard end and a loosely wound end. Bridge End
The hard end is threaded through the hole provided in the bridge and then wound around itself once.
A kink must be made at this end to enable the string to tighten on itself (fig 2).

By making the knot and tightening the string, you refrain from having to wind the extra six inches of spare string around the dowel.
Do not cut this waste string off as you may need it in an emergency. i.e.
I. New string might break at the bridge. (If this occurs you still have enough string to renew the bridge tie.)
2. Sometimes the treble strings need to be reversed to get a clearer sound
3. If the string is tied incorrectly, you will be able to undo it and try again.
Always turn the tuning peg anti-clock wise, this stops the string from touching the dowel in front

Changing the Treble Strings
Wait a week after changing the bass strings before attempting to change the treble. These strings normally have a clear end, which is threaded into the bridge hole and a coloured end, which is threaded through the tuning peg dowel.

Bridge End
Thread the clear end of the string through the correct hole of the bridge.
Next, tie a small knot at this end and wind the string around itself making sure the knotted end is placed on the side of the bridge.
Hold the knot in place and pull the main part of dowel end (fig 4).
